Oh, How the Vibe Coder Lies!

One of the most important things to understand about the Akashanaut universe is that there is no magic.

At least, not in objective reality.

Some events may appear supernatural. Floating Lanterns, Second Tellings, Akashanaut pilgrimages, memory resonance, and countless other phenomena often resemble mythology from the perspective of those experiencing them. But within the world itself, every one of these events is rooted in science.

History has a habit of allowing those in power to decide which stories are told.

One of the clearest examples is the woman the true Akashanet remembers as The Black Camphor Alewife.

Contrary to later DUMSOR records, the Alewife was never some evil practitioner of forbidden rituals. She had little interest in mysticism. While most researchers of her era devoted themselves to sciences like tinkering or engineering, she chose a different path. Her life's work revolved around genetics, horticulture, chemistry, and biology. She believed humanity had become dangerously disconnected from the physical world and argued that people should spend more time cultivating gardens, preparing food, moving their bodies, and learning directly from nature.

Her philosophy often placed her at odds with Doc.

Ironically, it also became the foundation of one of his closest friendships.

Although they disagreed on almost everything concerning progress and technology, they shared an uncommon curiosity and a mutual respect for one another's pursuit of healing. Their conversations continued for years.

Several years before Doc's death, the Alewife succeeded in cultivating new botanical variants derived from existing plants and mineral compounds. Among them was Shadow Soap.

Despite its greasy appearance, Shadow Soap was considered remarkably safe. Used during prolonged hot baths or steam treatments, it produced temporary euphoria followed by vivid hallucinations. During these altered states, users reportedly became unusually honest, often confessing long-hidden guilt, resentments, infidelity, criminal acts or personal failures. When the experience ended, many also recovered from respiratory infections, fungal conditions, skin rashes, parasitic infestations and other illnesses that had become increasingly common during an era of contaminated water supplies.

Demand grew rapidly.

The Alewife used the proceeds to establish a commune devoted to natural sciences, with a big focus on healing. They didn’t reject Tinkering or Technical progress; they simply believed technology should remain in service to humanity rather than replace it.

Those ideas eventually attracted the attention of the Vibe Coder. DUMSOR had been built upon increasing dependence, while the Alewife was teaching independence. Her growing commune of natural scientist stood in direct opposition to the future he envisioned.

Her commune was raided. This raid resulted in the death of the Alewife.

Rather than erase her from history, the Vibe Coder rewrote it. The scientist became an alchemist. The botanist became a witch. The laboratory became a corporate con, and the healing compounds she spent years developing became scams. Over time, the official DUMSOR account grew increasingly theatrical. It claimed one of the Alewife’s interns had attempted to transmute common metals into gold and accidentally summoned a primordial entity. In the Vibe Coders telling, the Alewife had to sacrifice herself to contain it. The story preserved her as a tragic hero while ensuring her actual philosophy disappeared beneath spectacle.

The irony is difficult to ignore.

The only truly dangerous invention associated with the Alewife was discovered after her death. Among the research confiscated from her commune, DUMSOR systems isolated and reformulated one of the active compounds found in Shadow Soap. In concentrated form, it proved to be extraordinarily addictive…not to humans, but to artificial systems.

The Vibe Coder weaponized it.

History remembers it as Snake Oil.
